Turning - Practices

1. ‘Pairs’

Organisation: 2 players, 10 yards from each other. Two balls required.

DO

1. Keep your head up to observe the ball and your partner

2. Turn and accelerate away in the opposite direction, when opposite your partner’s shoulders .

3. Keep your body between you and your partner when turning. Use your furthest foot away from your partner. Turn away from him, not in towards him.

2. ‘Tag’

Organisation: Area 10yds x 10yds

Both players have a ball. One defending player - in Stripes - has to keep the ball under control and tag the White player who attempts to avoid the Striped player by turning with the ball. Play for 30 seconds and count how many times the defender can tag the White player. Both players must keep the ball within the area. If the ball goes out of the area a ‘tag’ is awarded to the other player.

Change players after 30 seconds so that White then chases the Striped player.

DO

1. Play with your head up to see where your partner is.
2. Practice your three best turns.
3. Turn and accelerate away.

STREETGAMES

'Threes'

Threes

When you can use your three turns effectively then play the following games with opposition.

1. Red passes the ball to White 10 yards away and follows the pass to attempt to get the ball from White.

White lets the ball run and controls the ball away from Red with his back to Red.

2. White with his back to Red shields the ball from Red and when Red is attempting to win the ball by challenging on one side of White, White turns the other way by executing one of his three best turns.

3. White then passes to Blue 10 yards away and follows his pass to challenge Blue. Blue must then complete a turn and pass to Red. The practice then continues.

DO

1. Shield the ball - keep your body between the ball and the defender.

2. When the defender challenges on one side - turn the other way.

3. Accelerate away.

The White players receive the ball from a Red player outside the area and must pass the ball to either the Red target players outside the area. The White players can in turn pass to their team-mate or pass back to the Red player outside the area who started the game.

The Striped defenders try to gain possession and pass the ball to one of the Red players outside the area. The practice continues with either team in possession for three minutes and then two of the players inside the area change with the Red players.

DO

1. Spread out to allow the player on the ball space to turn against his/her opponent.

2. Disguise your intentions when on the ball. Pretend to pass and then turn. Pretend to turn and then pass.

3. Shield the ball and play with your head up.

DON'T

1. Bunch so that both defenders are near the ball.

2. Pass to the team mate inside the area where there is an opportunity to turn and pass the ball to the target player outside the area.

DON'T pass for the sake of it - DO take responsibility and attempt a turn.
