Heading - How to Master

If you’re prepared to ATTACK the ball then head for success.

1. ‘Headers’

Organisation:

The area is a 10 yards long with goals 4 yards apart.

The Maroon player throws the ball up and attempts to head past the striped player to score in the goal under head height.

The striped player saves using his/her hands and repeats the attempt to score past the Maroon player.

Either player instead of using their hands to save can attempt a return header to score back against the opponent.

Return headers score 2 goals.

Key Factors:

Don’t be afraid to head the ball back.
Head through the ball.
Diving headers are very important in keeping the ball low.

2. ‘Over/ Under’

Organisation:

The Maroon player stands 10 yards away from the striped player who has his/her legs apart and throws the ball for the Maroon player to head back.

The Striped player shouts either ‘over’ or ‘under’.

To score: For ‘under’ the Maroon player must head the ball through the Striped player’s legs.

For ‘over’ the Maroon player must head the ball over the Striped player’s head.

Key Factors:

Head through the top half of the ball to head down.
Head through the bottom half of the ball to head up.
